What heat source can I cook on with a clay pot?
These clay pots are traditionally used for cooking above charcoal and fire. They can also be used over a gas flame and in the oven. Always ensure the clay pot is raised above the charcoal or fire, and not placed directly on top as it is too hot and can cause cracking. As clay takes time to heat up and does not heat evenly, it is important to heat the pot gradually, starting from low to medium. It is best to cook on a medium heat, not high to maintain the longevity of the pot.
Can I use the pot on an induction or electric stove top?
You will need to use a simmer mat or heat diffuser below your pot to cook using induction.
You will need to use a simmer mat or heat diffuser between the heat source and your pot when using an electric stovetop to avoid thermal shock which can lead to cracking.
How do I wash my clay pot?
Scrub your pot with hot water and an eco detergent using a scourer. If food has stuck on the bottom of your pot, soak it for some time and then use a scourer or steel wool to clean the pot thoroughly. Steel wool will not damage the inside of our village pots, as they are glazed. If your pot is unglazed, avoid using steel wool.
How do I store my clay pot?
Store your pot in a well-ventilated area. Always ensure your pot is fully dry before storing away, and leave the lid open ajar to allow for airflow. The lid and rim of the pot are porous, so if stored away still damp, mould growth may form. If this happens, pour boiling water over the mould and scrub with vinegar or bicarb soda. Leave the pot to dry completely and store your pot as stated above.
How long will my clay pot last?
If cared for correctly, your pot should last you many many years.
I see cracks on the bottom of my pot, is my pot broken?
No, it is not. Hairline cracks will form over time and are a natural part of the ageing process. These cracks are superficial and will seal when cooking rice, lentils or other starchy foods.
My pot is leaking, what do I do?
If your pot is leaking, cover the cracks with water, add 3 tbsp rice flour and 2 tbsp sugar and bring to a boil. Cook until the mixture thickens. Leave it to cool and then discard the paste and clean the pot thoroughly. The leak should be fixed.
